ZAGREB, 20 August 2026– The Croatian Government has approved an initial €20 million emergency aid package for Omiš following the devastating wildfire that swept through the area last week.

The funds will be used to help with the removal and repair of damage caused by the fire, with the Government saying further financial assistance will be considered once the full extent of the damage has been established.

The first preliminary assessment by the City of Omiš puts the damage at around €110 million, while more than 140 properties are expected to be assessed as part of the ongoing process.

The Government has also announced a wider package of measures for residents, businesses and the local economy.

Among the measures are plans to provide tax relief for affected residents and businesses, including changes concerning flat-rate taxation, property tax and boat-related charges. Tourism businesses affected by the fire are also expected to receive relief from certain tourism fees and membership charges.

Support will also be available for businesses and workers, with measures aimed at protecting jobs and providing social and psychological assistance to people affected by the disaster.

Farmers in the affected area will be assessed for possible assistance, while authorities will determine the cost of repairing damaged buildings and infrastructure.

The package also includes measures concerning cultural heritage. The Ministry of Culture and Media will assess damage to cultural assets and prepare emergency protection and restoration measures where required.

Croatian war veterans affected by the disaster will receive a one-off payment of €500, Jutarnji listwrites.

The Government said the €20 million represents an initial intervention and that additional assistance could follow as the damage assessment progresses.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković also expressed condolences to the family of a woman who died in the fire and wished those injured a full recovery.
